HILLEBERG AMBASSADOR: Alexander Barber, a mountain guide and solo climber who challenges the limits
Alexander Barber was born in southern California, USA. His love for mountains originated from fly fishing in the alpine lakes and streams of the Sierra Nevada Mountains when he was young. The mountains towering above the lakes aroused his deep yearning. As a teenager, Alex climbed the local Mt. San Antonio for the first time after an unsuccessful winter solo climb of Mount Whitney. When asked why he climbs mountains, he said, "I've always believed that life begins at the end of our comfort zone. I've always been attracted to things that inspire and challenge me to become a better version of myself."
Today, Alex works as a professional mountain guide with Rainier Mountain Guides (RMI) while focusing on his own climbing goals. His current focus is on the 8,000-meter peaks of the Himalayas, using anaerobic and solo methods.
his love for climbing
“People ask me, how does it feel to be on top when everything comes full circle? That sense of accomplishment or exciting moment — what does it feel like? But for me, it’s not that moment at the top that draws me in. Or the excitement it brings, rather, the quiet and lasting satisfaction that comes from the simplicity of the climb, the moments of the journey, and the extraordinary beauty around us that challenges not the mountain, but ourselves.”
Why he uses a Hilleberg tent
"Hilleberg successfully combines the most important features in tent design - high strength and light weight, comfort and functionality, and ease of erection. On mountaineering expeditions, any mistakes can be very costly, so choose Hilleberg The tent is unquestionable."
Alex’s review of the different tents:
- Jannu Tent : “The Jannu is perfect for my alpine climbing needs. Whether it’s setting up a major base camp for a climb on a giant peak in the Himalayas or a multi-day expedition in the Sierra Nevada, the Jannu performs extremely well. I’ve set up the tent and been gone for long periods of time "Like all Hilleberg tents, the Jannu is made of high-quality materials that will stand up to the toughest adventures with minimal wear and tear."
- Soulo Tent : “The Soulo has been my tent of choice for recent Himalayan projects. It’s light enough for climbing challenging routes and strong enough to be a fortress. This tent continues Hilleberg’s consistent design features of combining strength and functionality. Easy to set up and lightweight, the Soulo is my go-to tent for multi-day solo climbs that not only adds to my safety margin, but also doesn’t become a burden.”
