The Importance of Tear Strength

The importance of tear-resistant fabric "Higher tear-resistant fabric strength equals higher safety." It's that simple! The stronger the fabric of your flysheet, the better it can withstand harsh weather, quick assembly, or accidental tears.

Hilleberg's tents use extremely strong Kerlon fabric. For example; our black label tents use Kerlon 1800 fabric, with a minimum tear resistance of 18kg; blue label tents use Kerlon 2000 fabric, with a tear resistance of 20kg; Kerlon 1200 fabric is used in red label tents, and its strength reaches 12kg. Kerlon 1000 and Kerlon 600, with strengths of 8kg and 6kg respectively, are used in all Hilleberg tents. Among the lightest yellow label tents, most tents are designed as three-season tents.

Hilleberg's incredibly strong fabric has a great advantage in being lightweight. In fact, most of the common tent fabrics on the market, especially those with polyester coating, have a strength of only 2 to 3kg.

High tear strength flysheet fabric is like extra "insurance" on any journey. If your trip is far away or harsh, such as Queen Maud Land in Antarctica.

Silicon processing
Kerlon fabric was born in 1975. At that time, Bo Hilleberg, the founder of Hilleberg, got a very light and waterproof fabric sample. At this time, Bo wanted to remove the edge of the fabric. He found that it was very difficult to remove. This silicon-coated fabric is very different from ordinary polyurethane fabric. It is lighter and more tear-resistant. Kerlon fabric That's how it was born.

Not all silicone-coated fabrics on the market are the same. Our Kerlon fabric has three layers of 100% silicone coating, which is completely waterproof and lighter than polyester-treated fabrics. The tear resistance of the Kerlon fabrics we have treated is stronger than other silicone-treated fabrics (usually coatings of silicone and other compounds).

This means that we can start to reduce the weight of tent fabrics and produce a lot of high-strength fabrics. Kerlon 1800, 1200 and 2000 are stronger than the expedition-grade tent fabrics on the market (even our lightweight Kerlon 1000 and 600 are stronger than them). As a result, if your tent has holes, This will prevent holes in the tent from expanding due to external force.

High tear strength is like insurance, it's not that you need it, it's that you have it. This kind of insurance will not increase your weight, and can increase the durability and life of the tent.
